Block paving driveways in Leicester
Traditional block paved driveways and patios, laid over a properly engineered base with full edge restraint — so they don't sink, shift or spread.
A classic that still earns its place
Block paving remains one of the most popular driveway surfaces in Leicester, and for good reason: it's hard-wearing, it comes in an enormous range of colours and formats, and individual blocks can be lifted and replaced if a service needs digging up or a block gets damaged.
The finish depends almost entirely on the groundwork. We excavate to the right depth, lay a geotextile membrane, compact a Type 1 or Type 3 sub-base in layers, then screed a laying course before the blocks go down. Edge courses are haunched in concrete, because without proper restraint any block driveway will eventually creep and open up at the edges.
We lay classic herringbone, stretcher bond and contemporary linear formats, with contrasting borders, soldier courses and inset detailing where you want them.

Where block paving wins
Repairable in sections
Individual blocks lift out, so a utility trench or a stained area can be put right without redoing the whole drive.
Huge design choice
Colours, sizes, textures and laying patterns, plus borders and soldier courses to frame the space.
Permeable options
Permeable block systems with open joints and a clean stone base meet drainage requirements where run-off matters.
Very hard-wearing
Concrete blocks handle vehicle loading well, including turning and parking in the same spot day after day.
Cost-effective
Usually less per square metre than resin bound, with the trade-off being joints, sand and occasional weeding.
Works with other surfaces
Block borders are the natural companion to a resin bound or tarmac drive — we often combine the two.
How we lay a block paved driveway
- 01
Free survey and quote
We measure up, check levels and drainage, discuss blocks and patterns, and give you a fixed written price.
- 02
Excavation and membrane
The existing surface comes up and we dig to the depth the finished levels demand, then lay a non-woven geotextile membrane.
- 03
Sub-base and edgings
A compacted sub-base goes in layers, and edge courses are set and haunched in concrete to restrain the paving.
- 04
Laying course and blocks
A screeded laying course, then blocks cut and laid to your chosen pattern with tight, consistent joints.
- 05
Jointing and compaction
Kiln-dried sand is brushed in and the surface is vibrated to lock the blocks together. We clear up and walk the job with you.
